As a sustainable interior designer, I am constantly trying to keep on top of the best and most recent green finishes, furniture, fixtures and their trends for my clients. The kitchen is one of the trendiest rooms in the home. If you are remodeling your existing home or having a new home designed and built, you need to be knowledgeable in what trend is in and out, so when your home is completed it will always look fresh and never out-of-date.  Not all trends are good trends.

Below is a list of significant kitchen trends that are in and others that are out this year:

What is in?

  • Tall cabinets for creating the illusion of being larger.
  • Cabinets flush with the ceiling.
  • Two-toned painted cabinets with the top and bottom doors painted in complimentary colors.
  • Cabinets finishes that hide microwaves and refrigerators.
  • Stainless steel for an industrial or modernized look.
  • Wood paneling to create a farmhouse style.
  • Quartz
  • Marble
  • Butcher block
  • Light and bright paint colors to create a more open feeling.
  • Mixed hardware for a more eclectic look.  Quality and good-looking hardware that will dress up a kitchen.

What is out?

  • Matching cabinetry
  • Shorter top row cabinets
  • Dark wood
  • Speckled granite.
  • Matching hardware

Always invest in the best green and sustainable finishes, furniture, and fixtures.  When considering design trends select the ones that will always look fresh and never look out-of-date the moment your home renovation or new home is completed.
