Tile Is a Superb Green Material: Make Use of It in Your Home

We like using ceramic and porcelain tile in our projects because of their green attributes and beauty. Tile can be creatively used in many different ways and places in a home. Sustainability is a way of life at Lynn Hoffman Design.

Just recently one of our client’s requested that we use a different material other than stone slabs for their new kitchen coundtertops, so we suggested tile. They loved the idea. Tiled countertops were popular in the 1970s in the U.S. and recenlty have been making a come back in the U.S. and Europe.

Today there are so many colorful, unique and gorgeous tiles to select from and many are produced from recycled materials keeping our resources and planet in mind.

The following information is about why ceramic and porcelain tiles are a suitable choice for sustainable interior design projects:

Life Cycle. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are some of the longest lasting floor and wall products, they are earth-friendly design elements that last much longer than soft surfaces, as well as all other hard surfaces, and most likely won’t need to be replaced for decades.

Indoor Air Quality. Walls and floors usually account for more surface area than anything in a house does, so they have a greater effect on indoor air quality. Adults, children and pets walk, play and sit on them, wear them down, and breathe in what they emit for many years.Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contribute to a wide variety of health problems and are a significant cause of “sick building syndrome.” Because tile is fired in kilns at extremely high temperatures, there are zero volatile organics in the finish product that can be released in the air we breathe. Some carpets, vinyl, and wood flooring contain low VOCs, but none can compare to zero.

Hypoallergenic. Tile is inhospitable to dust mites, mold, germs, and bacteria and often used to replace carpet for people with allergies or asthma.

Recycling. Today’s tile factories reuse water and materials. Only negligible amounts of scraps are sent to landfills and waste treatment facilities.

Regional Availability. Because tile manufactures are located in every region of the United States, tile and installation products can be made with local raw materials and are widely available. Regional availability helps to reduce the amount of energy consumption and air emissions associated with shipping from the factory to the job site.

Low Maintenance. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are easily cleaned, often with warm water, eliminating the need for chemicals and cleaners to maintain other flooring types.
