5 Easy Ways to Help Improve Your Home’s Indoor Air Quality

Your health and the health of indoor environments is one of the most important aspects of sustainable and green interior design because we spend so much time indoors. The indoor air quality in your home is mostly the homeowner’s responsibility. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that indoor air can be two-to five-times more polluted than the air outdoor.

Take care of your family’s health, especially if someone in your family has allergies, asthma or lung disease.

Below are five easy ways to help you improve the indoor air quality of your home:

1. Improve Indoor Ventilation. Ventilate your home and keep the air moving as much as possible by opening windows and doors and turning on fans. This allows for natural ventilation, which works to improve the indoor air quality by decreasing the number of pollutants in your home.

2. Be Conscious of Moisture and Humidity. Keep humidity level between 30 and 50 percent to protect your home against mold, dust mites and other allergens. Invest in a dehumidifier, and use exhaust fans while cooking and bathing. Don’t ignore leaky plumbing, take care of it as soon as possible, and don’t overwater indoor plants.

3. Purchase a HEPA Filter Vacuum-Cleaner. HEPA filters provide the highest level of vacuum-cleaner filtration available. This level of filtration is imperative for people suffering from allergies or asthma. These filters are made for sifting out fine dust. HEPA vacuums are created to help guard your home against allergens and toxins in the air.

4. Wash Your Bedding Regularly. Always purchase machine washable bedding and pillows. Wash all bedding each week in order to keep allergens out of your home.

5. Add Houseplants To Your Interiors. Adding houseplants to your home can help purify air and reduce harmful particulates in the air, as they absorb carbon dioxide to photosynthesize fresh oxygen.
